Bolt Thrower - In Battle There Is No Law (LP)
Destruction, murder—that’s all you see. Released in 1988, at a time when death metal as a genre was still in its infancy and the vast majority of bands had yet to release their first album, BOLT THROWER struck hard with their debut album In Battle There Is No Law!, making an immediate impact on the emerging underground scene. Preceded by only a handful of albums such as DEATH’s Scream Bloody Gore, NAPALM DEATH’s Scum, and NECROPHAGIA’s Season of the Dead, In Battle There Is No Law! is widely regarded as a milestone and one of the very first death metal albums ever released.
The album, consisting of 8 tracks and running about 28 minutes, was originally released by Vinyl Solution and is perhaps BOLT THROWER’s rawest and most primitive work. Despite its uncompromising, rough sound and still clearly noticeable crust and punk influences, the characteristics for which BOLT THROWER would later become famous are already present—albeit in a rather raw form.
Rather than being a drawback, it is precisely this unfiltered rawness—something that is somewhat absent from their later albums—that gives In Battle There Is No Law! its special, unmistakable charm. Instead of focusing on distinctive melodies and a mid-tempo groove, the songwriting leans more toward a frontal assault. Karl’s vocals are also slightly different; at times he abandons his signature style in favor of vocals that sound more punk than death metal.
The lyrics already explore the various dark aspects of war, and the cover of the first album features a different logo than the rest of their discography. This, together with the punk-like artwork on the sleeve, sets BOLT THROWER’s first album apart and makes it a unique entry within the discography of one of the most important death metal bands.
In Battle There Is No Law! is available as an LP in three colors and as a CD in a jewel case.
